Website Development
Methodology
All our sites are built to the highest possible technical and design standards.
Client-side development
We use a web standards approach for all our client-side code. This means:
- All our code is valid XHTML 1.0 Strict at launch
- All our code separates presentation from layout using CSS
- JavaScript where used is unobtrusive
- All XHTML mark-up is as semantic as possible
- All our code is written with Search Engine Optimisation in mind
- All our code is written to AA or AAA standard of technical accessibility according to
WCAG 1 - All pages will be cross-browser tested
- The site will look perfect or near-perfect in the following browsers: Internet Explorer 7 & 8 (Windows XP, Windows Vista & Windows 7), Firefox 3, 3.5 & 3.6 (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Mac OS X), Safari 3 & 4 (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Mac OS X)
- Older browsers will be able to access all functionality but we do not guarantee the look and feel is identical to newer versions
- All code is built to gracefully degrade to be “browser proof” e.g. to look acceptable when text-sizes are changed, at low or high browser window sizes etc.
Server-side development
We use open-source technologies where possible, as they tend to be better documented and have a better supply of developers. Generally, we develop using PHP 5 and MySQL 5.
Coding approach
For smaller projects, we use procedural mark-up, as it is the most cost-effective approach for projects of this size. For larger projects, where appropriate, we use an object-oriented approach.
Quality of code
Whichever approach we employ, we code to industry standards.
Documentation
All server-side code is documented, to allow easy hand over of the code to another developer in future.
Use of existing open-source code
Depending on the nature of the project, existing open-source software such as Joomla! may be used to build some aspects of the site. This reduces costs and increases reliability as these tools have already been user-tested by the web development community.
Testing
All code is thoroughly and methodically tested using a variety of approaches, including user testing and heuristic testing (pre-defined check points).
